Do telesales roles get a bad press?

Do telesales roles get a bad press?

Sales roles, particularly telesales have changed dramatically. Many of the roles we recruit for are about relationship building. Above all be a great representative for the company you work for.

Recruitment Consultant (Sales Division) Robyn says “Demand has always been high for sales people in and around Exeter. Particularly for those who are happy and confident to talk over the phone. Whether it’s taking calls from potential customers or making calls out to prospects. Long gone are the days of having impossible call targets and it being all about the hard sell!

“As Exeter grows, there’s a number of companies that have recently established themselves, are successful and growing fast. They’re asking us to help them find people with the right skills to join their team. Want to start your career in telesales? There’s never been a better time. Or take that next step if you’ve already got experience.

“The clients we work with offer a great environment. They’re warm and welcoming and the teams are happy, successful and professional. I’ve seen this for myself as I always make a point of visiting them. The managers are supportive and are more than happy to spend time giving training and there are great career prospects for people who want to progress too.

“We’ve placed people in Business Development roles, who have been promoted to Account Manager in a matter of weeks and in turn Account Directors after a few months.

“The reward packages are attractive too. The roles I’m recruiting for have a good basic salary, some have uncapped commission and have good benefits on top.

“In terms of what makes a good telesales person – as the role has evolved – so have the kind of skills employees are looking for.”

Here are Robyn’s thoughts on the kind of skills and experience that make for a great telesales person!

Communication skills

“An obvious one perhaps but as well as being able to talk to people, it’s just as important to be able to listen, to take on board what’s being said and ask questions to really understand people’s needs.”

Previous experience

“I have roles that don’t need people to have experience. As training and support will be given so the client is looking for the right person to join the team. We also have vacancies for people that have experience and are looking to take the next step in their career.

“Experience doesn’t necessarily have to have been in a telesales role either. People who have worked in a call centre or worked in customer services can often have the right characteristics to make the move to sales.

“If you’re willing to be on the phone – that’s a great start!”

Personal characteristics

“There’s never going to be ‘one size fits all’ but in general the type of person our clients are looking for are confident, enthusiastic and positive with the determination to beat any targets they’re set. Someone who can fit in with the rest of the team or bring that ‘something’ extra, is always an added bonus.”

Robyn wraps up “I’d encourage anyone who’s thinking of getting in to telesales to get in touch with me. If you’d like more detail I’m happy to spend time talking it through.”
