Ever wondered what kind of questions to ask when you’re interviewing your potential new team member? Sarah runs through her top three!
“Styles change all the time and today it’s all about getting a candidate to relax so you can really get to know them during that interview.
“I’m not a fan of candidates being deliberately grilled for the sake of it or being put under pressure as I don’t think this is very constructive. So here are three of my favourite questions at the moment that I can easily be adapted in to your interview process to make sure that you get the most out of the person sitting in front of you.
“First up is “How does this role fit in with your future career plans?”. This is a great way of finding out what someone’s future plans are for their career and just doing a little check that they’ve really thought about this role and that they know that it’ll be a good fit to them.
“The second question would be “What would you need from us in order to reach your potential in this role?”. This is a good way of finding out about any skills that might need uplifting and any other development needs that somebody might have.
“My favourite question at the moment has to be “What are you most proud of?”. I ask that because it’s a really open question and it gives candidates the opportunity to talk about things they’ve achieved in previous roles or outside of the workplace. You really find out what their drivers are, what they’ve achieved – you can get some beautiful answers to that question.
“To balance it up, the ones that I don’t like are those trick questions – the ones that give you irrelevant answers. Things like “If you were a tree, what tree would you be?” – I’m not really sure what you’d get from that answer!
“If you’ve got any questions that work for you, I’d love to hear them!”
