Career development and what it means to you

Are you looking for career development? It’s very common to be asked in an interview what you’re looking for in you next job. A fairly standard response from candidates is that they want ‘career development’ or progression.

Explain what you mean

These are terms that are used flippantly and are a little ambiguous. It could be easy for a hiring manager to assume you’re super ambitious and not planning on staying in their role. Being clear what you mean when you say you’re looking for career development or progression in your career.

For some applicants it’s the opportunity to increase and improve their skills. It shows that the company they’ll be working for have a commitment to the training and development. For others it’s the opportunity to increase responsibility and therefore salary. Promotion and taking a step up is important for some. Be clear about what you mean in an interview so that your long term needs are understood and you aren’t ruled out of a recruitment process because the hiring manager has misunderstood your expectations.

Next time you’re asking what you’re looking for in your next job, try to answer the question without using those particular terms and explain what type of company you want to work for and what the important things are to you about your next job in both the short and long term.
