More and more of our clients are using a phone interview as the first stage or their recruitment process. It’s quicker and easier for everyone and of course for a hiring manager who's looking someone for a telephone based role, it’s a great way to assess who a candidate comes across over the phone.
As a candidate, a phone interview is your gateway to the next stage of the recruitment process and should be taken as seriously as a face-to-face first interview. Here are our top tips to smash a phone interview.
How to smash a phone interview
Make sure that you give a number that the interviewer will be able to call and get through on. If you are giving your mobile number make sure that you will be able to get the signal needed to take the call
Consider your surroundings and plan to be in a room without distractions or disruptions
Have a pen and a piece of paper to hand, so that you can make notes during the interview. This will also be helpful to note points that you want to come back to/get across, without interrupting the interviewer as they talk. Personally I would avoid having your CV or the job description in front of you as it could be distracting
As with any interview, preparation is paramount. A phone interview is just as formal as doing it face to face and should be treated with the respect it deserves. Make sure you have researched the company and role, consider the questions you are likely to be asked and practice your answers. Have two or three questions you might like to ask at this stage, they could related to the company or role, or you might want to ask about the next step in the process and when you’re likely to find out.
Some candidates find it helpful to wear interview clothes, to get into the right frame of mind for an interview
Make sure that you are ready just before the agreed time. Consider how you will answer the phone when it rings, rather than ‘hello?’ it would sound more profession to answer with ‘Good afternoon, Josh Fuller (but use your name and not mine!) speaking’
Let your personality shine through but think about your language and choice of words. Avoid any swearing, over familiarity or slang as you speak
Always end the conversation thanking the interviewer for their time, and ensure they have finished talking before you put the phone down
